Experience an educational tour and hands-on photography lesson in Toronto's historic Distillery District.
Upon arrival at the Distillery District and following an introduction to your photographer you will be guided on a brief tour of the area, founded in 1832 by Brothers-in-law William Gooderham and James Worts.
The Gooderham and Worts Distillery eventually became the largest distillery in the British Empire. Set on 13 acres in downtown Toronto, the forty plus buildings constitute the largest and best preserved collection of Victorian Industrial Architecture in North America.
Each building has its own character and your photographer will show you how to compose the perfect shot for that ‘picture postcard’ look with particular emphasis on the dramatic effects of black and white to help you best achieve your creative goals. He will also be delighted to pass on general tips and techniques on how to use your digital camera.
Like Soho in the 1960’s, The Distillery District has become an area associated with creative thinking and expression. The area’s rebirth has been dedicated to promoting arts, culture and entertainment.
Over the past few years this new landmark facility has attracted the best of the best, including internationally acclaimed galleries, artists from all corners of the arts spectrum, theatres, restaurants, cafes and boutique retailers, all of which you may want to further enjoy and photograph at your own pace following the completion of your experience.

Meet the Studio Owner...
Richard Emmanuel is an accomplished multimedia professional whose artistic talents and business savvy have propelled him to the forefront of the Canadian and international photography scenes. From an early age, Richard was surrounded by photography and art. His father, Milan, an expert photographer first exposed Richard to the world of cameras, images and light. Richard’s future was destined from the moment he picked up his first camera, astonishing everyone with his inherent talent to capture the beauty of life one frame at a time.
After completing his Bachelors of Applied Arts from Ryerson University in Toronto, Richard assumed the responsibilities of operating and managing the family’s business, Canada’s largest full service photography studio.
In 1998 he capitalized on the success of the family business and launched Solarfocus Media Group—a commercial multimedia company specializing in visual content for advertising and industrial imaging. Blue-chip clients include AT&T, Bell Canada, McDonalds, Royal Bank, VISA, as well as Canadian Living Magazine, to name a few.
Encouraged by the success of his commercial enterprises and the increased demand for his artistic visual works, in 2002 Richard launched Richard Emmanuel—an exclusive personalized photography service. This select service has found its patrons amongst Royals, celebrities, world leaders and public figures. Select clientele include Her Royal Highness Princess Anne, Pope John Paul II, French President Jacques Chirac, Right Honourable Lord Robertson of Port Ellen, NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer and former US Secretary of State Colin Powell.
Richard is currently expanding his interests to include program development for television and specialty channels. He has been prominently featured on A&E, CityTV and the Global Television Network as a world-renowned photographer and industry expert. Richard Emmanuel presently resides in Toronto. He and his wife Stephanie are happily married and have a new baby girl.
In the News:
Richard Emmanuel was named Studio of the Month by the international Photography Monthly magazine. The magazine noted that “Presidents of nations, heads of state, high-ranking military and political officials have all stood before his lens.” It goes on to state that when Richard covered the Atlantic Treaty Organization’s 49th General Assembly, he was the only official photographer with permission to photograph Princess Anne in the Holyrood Palace and aboard the Royal Yacht Britannia. The article concludes, “After all, if he’s photographed world leaders, he is definitely capable of covering [clients’] weddings or portraits properly.”
